Temporary Shelter Centers

Temporary Shelter Centers are an interdisciplinary initiative that combines architecture, emergency management, and humanitarian assistance. The project focuses on the planning and development of spaces that not only meet architectural standards but also comply with minimum humanitarian standards and universal accessibility criteria. These efforts have been developed in close collaboration with the Metropolitan District of Quito’s General Secretariat for Risk Management (SRG), SEK International University, and the Ecuadorian Association of Architects.

Data Collection and Assessment

Planimetric Survey

Phase 1

The first phase consisted of conducting planimetric surveys of four operational centers within the city of Quito (Los Chillos, Tumbaco, La Delicia, and Calderón), which are intended to provide shelter for people affected by emergency situations. These surveys enabled the collection of detailed and accurate information on the spatial layout and physical characteristics of the existing facilities. This information was essential for the design and planning process carried out during the second phase of the project.

Spatial Layout Design.

Phase 2

The second phase focused on developing two alternative spatial layout designs for the Los Chillos Operational Center, based on the NTE INEN 2849-1 standard, “Universal Accessibility and Design for All.” As a result, architectural plans and a set of design recommendations were produced. The center is located within 6 de Junio Park in Conocoto, on Marqueza de Solanda Street, and currently operates as a Community Police Unit (UPC).

Cristina Villota

UISEK Teacher

Cristina Villota Chiriboga, M.Sc., Arch., is a highly accomplished architect with a strong academic background. She holds a Master’s Degree in Building Construction from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, where her thesis focused on sustainability and the recycling of construction materials. She also earned her Architecture degree from SEK International University, with a professional focus on improving quality of life through architectural design.

She has demonstrated a strong capacity for innovation in design, serving as the creative force behind several renovation projects in Quito. As the director of research projects, she has made significant contributions to advancing knowledge in areas such as seismic vulnerability and structural retrofitting.

In addition, Cristina has shared her expertise as a university lecturer at SEK International University, where she has trained future architects and engineers across a variety of subjects. She has also served as the director of several community engagement projects, aimed at strengthening students’ education through tangible initiatives with a positive impact on society.
